Black-handed Spider Monkey
Ateles geoffroyi
An adult black-handed spider monkey lives high in the rainforests of Central America and nearby regions, moving through the canopy in loose, shifting social groups. It is primarily frugivorous, seeking ripe fruit but also eating leaves, flowers, and other plant foods when needed. Adults travel with sweeping arm movements, suspended postures, and a powerful prehensile tail that acts like an extra limb. One notable trait is their loud calling, which helps maintain contact across dense forest.
