Long-tailed Chinchilla Kit
Chinchilla lanigera (kit)
Long-tailed chinchilla kits are born in rocky crevices or burrow-like shelters in the dry Andes of northern Chile. Unlike many rodents, they are precocial, emerging fully furred with open eyes and able to move soon after birth. They nurse from the mother while quickly beginning to nibble grasses and other sparse mountain plants. Their dense fur is already important insulation against cold nights at high elevation.
