Mongolian Jird
Meriones unguiculatus

The adult Mongolian jird lives in dry grasslands, scrub, and semi-desert habitats of Mongolia and northern China. It digs branched burrow systems with nest chambers and food-storage areas, emerging to forage for seeds, grasses, roots, and occasional insects. When threatened, it relies on rapid dashes, sharp incisors, digging claws, and retreat into tunnels. A notable fact is that it conserves water efficiently, allowing it to thrive in arid landscapes where drinking water may be scarce.
