Southern Meat Ant
Iridomyrmex purpureus

The adult Southern Meat Ant inhabits open, sunny areas of southern Australia, often building large gravel-covered nests in dry soil. It forages actively for dead insects, small prey, seeds, and sugary honeydew from sap-feeding insects. Adults defend themselves with strong mandibles and irritating chemical secretions rather than a functional sting. A notable fact is that their conspicuous nest mounds and cleared foraging trails can shape the surrounding ground surface.
