Rove Beetle
Paederus australis

The adult is a slender, fast-running rove beetle found in moist farmland, grass, litter, and places near lights after dusk. It preys on small arthropods and folds full flight wings under very short wing covers when not flying. When disturbed it often raises the abdomen in a scorpion-like posture, but it does not sting. Its body fluid can contain pederin, a potent irritant that may cause blistering dermatitis if crushed on skin.
