Metallic Green Carpenter Bee

Xylocopa aeratus

Metallic Green Carpenter Bee

The adult lives in eastern Australian woodlands, gardens, and forest edges where flowers and dead timber are available. It drinks nectar and gathers pollen, acting as a pollinator while females also excavate nest tunnels in wood with strong mandibles. Adults are solitary to loosely social bees, and females can defend themselves with a venomous sting if handled or trapped. Its vivid metallic green body makes it one of the more distinctive Australian carpenter bees.
