Short-eared Owl
Asio flammeus

An adult open-country owl found in grasslands, prairies, marshes, dunes, and tundra, often hunting low over the ground with slow, moth-like wingbeats. It feeds mainly on voles and other small mammals, but it may also take small birds and insects when available. Unlike many owls, it is often active at dusk and sometimes by day, especially where prey is abundant. A notable feature is its short ear tufts, which are usually hard to see despite the species' name.
