Giant Otter Pup
Pteronura brasiliensis (pup)

Giant otter pups are born in sheltered dens dug into riverbanks in Amazon and Orinoco basin wetlands. They are initially helpless and depend on adults for warmth, protection, and fish brought back to the den, but they soon begin practicing swimming in shallow water. Young pups explore by biting, paddling, and following older otters near the bank. A notable early milestone is learning to swim confidently, since even this highly aquatic species has to be taught by its family.
