Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec
Echinops telfairi

The adult lesser hedgehog tenrec lives mainly in dry forests, spiny scrub, and rocky or leaf-littered ground in southwestern Madagascar. It is mostly nocturnal, foraging for insects and other small invertebrates with its pointed snout and sharp little teeth. When threatened, it curls into a tight spiny ball or wedges itself into cover rather than trying to outrun danger. One notable fact is that this species can enter torpor during cool or dry periods, greatly lowering its activity to save energy.
