Radiated Tortoise
Astrochelys radiata
An adult inhabits the dry forests, thorn scrub, and grassy clearings of southern Madagascar, moving slowly between feeding and basking sites. It grazes on grasses, herbs, succulent plants, cactus pads, flowers, and fallen fruit. When threatened, it withdraws into its high-domed shell and may hiss as air is forced from the lungs. This species is famous for its bold yellow starburst shell markings and can be very long-lived.
