Emerald Monitor Hatchling

Varanus prasinus (hatchling)

Emerald Monitor Hatchling

A newly hatched emerald monitor is a tiny arboreal lizard of lowland New Guinea and nearby islands, usually staying among thin branches, leaf litter, and dense foliage. It hunts small insects and other soft-bodied invertebrates with quick snaps of its jaws. Its bright green body and dark crossbands help break up its outline among leaves. Even at this stage it has long toes and sharp claws suited for climbing almost as soon as it leaves the egg.
