Amethystine Python
Simalia amethistina

An adult Amethystine Python inhabits rainforests, woodland edges, river corridors, and sometimes areas near farms or settlements in New Guinea, northern Australia, and nearby islands. It is an ambush predator that feeds on birds and mammals, striking from cover before constricting prey with its powerful body. Adults are among the longest snakes in the world, though they are nonvenomous and depend on strength rather than toxins. The polished scales often flash purple, blue, or bronze in sunlight, producing the amethyst-like sheen that inspired the name.
