Florida garden spider
Argiope florida
Adult Florida garden spiders live in warm, open habitats such as gardens, fields, roadsides, and scrubby edges with sturdy plants for web anchors. They sit in orb webs and capture flying insects, subduing prey with silk wrapping and venomous bites. Adults are more conspicuous than juveniles, with stronger web construction and a larger abdomen for producing silk and eggs. A notable fact is that their patterned bodies and web decorations can help break up their outline or warn larger animals away.
