American Bird Locust
Schistocerca americana

An adult American bird locust lives in open grassy habitats, pastures, roadsides, and agricultural areas across the southeastern United States. It eats a wide range of leaves, including grasses and crop plants, and escapes danger with powerful jumps followed by strong flight. The long wings extend beyond the abdomen, giving it a birdlike flying profile for a grasshopper. Adults may startle predators with wing flashes, rattling flight, or bitter regurgitated fluid when handled.
