Long-eared Owl
Asio otus
This slender nocturnal owl lives in open woodland, shelterbelts, and forest edges near grassland or farmland. It hunts mostly by silent flight, taking voles, mice, small birds, and insects with sharp talons. During the day it roosts quietly in dense trees, relying on streaked plumage and an upright posture for camouflage. Its long ear tufts are display feathers, not the actual ears used for its excellent hearing.
