Australian subterranean termite
Coptotermes frenchi

The mature Australian subterranean termite lives in soil galleries, timber, and mud tubes, especially around damp eucalypt wood and buried cellulose. It feeds on wood and plant fibres, relying on gut microbes to break down cellulose. It usually stays hidden from open air and seals exposed routes with soil to conserve moisture. One notable fact is that defensive castes can produce irritating secretions from the head to deter attackers inside the tunnels.
