Pyrrhuloxia
Cardinalis sinuatus

An adult Pyrrhuloxia lives in hot desert scrub, mesquite thickets, thorn woodland, and dry brushy edges of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It flies between low perches, sings from exposed branches, and defends breeding space with calls, postures, and close chases. Its diet is mainly seeds, fruits, and insects, with a strong curved bill well suited for cracking tough plant material. Males are gray with red highlights and a jaunty crest, giving the species a cardinal-like profile adapted to arid country.
