Pointed Snail
Cochlicella acuta

Adults live in dry grassland, dunes, field edges, and other open calcareous habitats, especially around the Mediterranean and coastal parts of western Europe. They graze on algae, fungi, lichens, and living or dead plant material using a rough radula. In hot dry weather they often climb stems, fence posts, or low vegetation and seal themselves inside the shell to aestivate above the heated ground. Their long, narrow, sharply conical shell gives the species its pointed appearance and helps reduce water loss when withdrawn.
