Rufous Hummingbird Hatchling
Selasphorus rufus (hatchling)

A newly hatched Rufous Hummingbird is a blind, bare chick tucked deep inside a tiny cup nest lined with plant down and spider silk. It stays almost motionless while the mother brings regurgitated nectar mixed with tiny insects for protein. Its main behavior is gaping and giving faint begging calls when the nest is disturbed or a parent arrives. One notable fact is that it begins life weighing less than a paperclip but grows rapidly in the warm, elastic nest.
