Black Bean Aphid
Aphis fabae

Adult black bean aphids live on the soft growth of many herbaceous plants, especially broad beans and other crops, where they tap sap with piercing-sucking mouthparts. Most summer adults are wingless females that give birth to live young, while winged forms appear when crowded or when host plants decline. They excrete honeydew that can attract ants and encourage sooty mold on leaves. Their paired cornicles release defensive droplets and alarm pheromones, a small but important chemical defense against predators.
