Southern Mole Cricket
Gryllotalpa australis

The adult Southern Mole Cricket is a stout, underground-dwelling cricket found in damp soils across parts of Australia, especially in grassy habitats and cultivated areas. It digs branching burrows with powerful front legs and feeds on roots, organic matter, and small invertebrates in the soil. Adults have wings and may fly, particularly on warm nights, but they are best known for life below ground. Males call from specially shaped burrows that amplify their loud, low chirping song.
