Bean Beetle

Bruchus rufimanus

Bean Beetle

The adult is a small seed beetle found around broad beans, vetches, and related legume plants, especially where pods are forming. It feeds lightly as an adult and focuses on mating and laying eggs on host pods, leaving the larvae to bore into the seeds. Its compact body has hardened wing covers, with functional wings folded underneath for short flights between plants. A notable fact is that much of the life cycle is tied to a single seed, even though the winged adult can disperse to new host plants.
