Great Peacock Moth
Saturnia pyri
This huge nocturnal moth inhabits orchards, woodland edges, gardens, and scrub across parts of Europe. Adults do not feed, living briefly on energy stored from the caterpillar stage while males fly at night to locate females by scent. Its broad wings carry large eyespots that can startle predators when suddenly exposed. With a wingspan that can exceed many small birds, it is one of Europe’s largest moths.
