Yellowtail Snapper

Ocyurus chrysurus

Yellowtail Snapper

Adult yellowtail snappers inhabit coral reefs, rocky ledges, and clear tropical waters of the western Atlantic and Caribbean. They are swift predatory fish that feed on small fish, shrimp, crabs, worms, and other reef animals, often becoming more active around dusk or at night. The bright yellow tail and long yellow stripe along the body are key field marks. Adults can live for many years and are important reef predators as well as valued food fish.
