Sheepshead

Archosargus probatocephalus

Sheepshead

Adult sheepshead live around reefs, bridge pilings, jetties, oyster beds, and other hard coastal structure in the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. They browse on barnacles, crabs, clams, mussels, and other hard-shelled prey, crushing them with distinctive incisor-like front teeth and molar-like grinding teeth. Their deep, barred bodies give them maneuverability in tight cover, and those humanlike teeth are one of the species' most famous traits.
