Emperor Penguin Chick
Aptenodytes forsteri (chick)

A downy young emperor penguin lives in dense breeding colonies on Antarctic sea ice, sheltered on a parent's feet at first and later gathered in crèches. It eats regurgitated fish, squid, and krill delivered by its parents after long foraging trips. The chick cannot swim yet and relies on thick gray down, huddling, and persistent calls to survive the cold. A notable fact is that parent and chick recognize each other by individual vocal calls in a crowded colony.
