Spectacled Bear Cub
Tremarctos ornatus (cub)
Spectacled bear cubs are born in sheltered dens and spend their early months close to their mother in Andean cloud forest, dry forest, or high-elevation shrubland. They nurse at first, then begin sampling fruits, soft plant material, insects, and scraps of the adult diet as they grow. Young cubs climb readily, using their claws to stay safe in trees and to follow their mother through steep habitat. Their pale facial markings are already visible, though the pattern varies between individuals.
