Pygmy Hippopotamus
Choeropsis liberiensis

The adult pygmy hippopotamus is a shy, mostly nocturnal resident of West African forests, swamps, and slow-moving streams. It feeds on ferns, broad leaves, grasses, shoots, and fallen fruit, usually traveling alone along well-worn paths. Despite being far smaller than the common hippopotamus, it has a sturdy body, thick skin, and powerful jaws for defense. A notable habit is scattering dung with rapid tail movements to mark trails and territories.
