Common Wormsnake
Carphophis amoenus

Adult common wormsnakes live in moist woodlands, old fields, and forest edges, usually sheltering beneath stones, logs, bark, or shallow soil. They are secretive fossorial predators that feed mostly on earthworms, along with other soft-bodied invertebrates found underground. This nonvenomous snake has smooth brown upper scales and a pink belly, giving it an earthworm-like look when glimpsed briefly. A notable defense is its harmless but startling pointed tail tip, which it may press against a handler while releasing musk and trying to burrow away.
