Red Kite Hatchling
Milvus milvus (hatchling)
A red kite hatchling is a downy, nest-bound chick raised high in a tree nest in wooded farmland or open countryside. It cannot fly yet and depends on its parents to bring carrion, small mammals, birds, and scraps of prey. Its main defenses are staying low, pecking weakly, and calling when hungry or disturbed. One notable feature is how quickly darker juvenile feathers begin to replace the pale down.
