African Spurred Tortoise
Centrochelys sulcata

Adult African spurred tortoises inhabit dry savannas, semi-desert margins, and scrublands across the southern Sahara and Sahel. They are powerful herbivores, grazing on coarse grasses and tough plants while avoiding too much fruit or wet food. Adults dig extensive burrows that buffer extreme heat and dryness, sometimes creating shelter used by other animals as well. Males can ram and shove rivals, and the species is one of the largest tortoises in the world.
