Common Darter
Sympetrum striolatum

The adult Common Darter is a small dragonfly often seen around ponds, marshes, canals, and sheltered wetland edges. It hunts from perches, darting out to catch mosquitoes, midges, and other flying insects before returning to rest. Males are usually reddish while females and younger adults are yellow-brown, and both can bask on warm paths or fence posts. This species is notable for flying late into the year in mild weather, sometimes still active in autumn.
