Eastern Rat Snake Hatchling
Pantherophis alleghaniensis (hatchling)
Eastern rat snake hatchlings shelter in wooded edges, brush piles, and cracks in bark or stone. They hunt small frogs, lizards, and nestling rodents, often remaining still before striking quickly. Young snakes are patterned in gray or brown blotches that help conceal them against leaf litter and tree bark.
