White-tailed Kite
Elanus leucurus

The adult white-tailed kite inhabits open grasslands, scrub, farmland, and woodland edges where small mammals are abundant. It hunts chiefly by hovering into the wind before dropping feet-first onto rodents, though it also takes birds, reptiles, and large insects. Outside the breeding season it may roost communally in sheltered trees. Its pale head, dark shoulder patches, and white tail make it distinctive in flight.
