Humpback anglerfish
Melanocetus johnsonii
Adult humpback anglerfish inhabit deep ocean waters, often hundreds of metres below the surface. They are ambush predators that swallow fishes, crustaceans, and other available prey with enormous jaws. A glowing lure above the head attracts curious animals within striking range. Females can expand their stomachs enough to consume prey nearly their own size.
