Banana Coral
Trachyphyllia geoffroyi

Banana coral is a solitary, large-polyped stony coral found on sheltered reef slopes and sandy reef margins in the Indo-Pacific. It expands fleshy, often brightly colored tentacles at night to catch zooplankton and suspended organic matter. Stinging cells on its tentacles help subdue tiny prey and deter animals that disturb it. Unlike many reef-building corals, it usually lives as an individual free-living polyp rather than in a large branching colony.
