Downy Woodpecker
Dryobates pubescens

The adult is a small North American woodpecker of forests, parks, orchards, and backyard trees, often moving nimbly along branches and trunks. It feeds mainly on insects, beetle larvae, ants, and other arthropods, but also takes seeds, berries, and suet. It excavates nest cavities in dead wood and uses drumming as a territorial display rather than true song. Its short bill helps distinguish it from the similar but larger Hairy Woodpecker.
