Dark Jerusalem Cricket
Ammopelmatus fuscus

The adult dark Jerusalem cricket inhabits dry, sandy ground, sheltering in burrows, under rocks, and among surface debris. It is chiefly nocturnal and uses its powerful jaws to eat roots, tubers, carrion, and small invertebrates. When threatened, it may hiss, rear up, and deliver a painful pinch with its mandibles. Despite its cricket name, it has a heavy, wingless body and does not fly.
