Fathead Minnow
Pimephales promelas
Adult fathead minnows inhabit ponds, wetlands, lakeshores, and slow-moving streams across much of North America. They feed on algae, detritus, aquatic insects, and small crustaceans. Breeding males develop a dark head and rough breeding tubercles, then vigorously defend nests beneath rocks, wood, or other submerged surfaces.
