Black Carpenter Ant Queen

Camponotus pennsylvanicus (queen)

Black Carpenter Ant Queen

Black carpenter ant queens establish colonies in cavities of dead, damp, or damaged wood, later remaining deep within protected galleries as workers expand the nest. After mating, a queen sheds her wings and is fed sugary liquids and insect prey by workers once the colony is established. A notable fact is that she can live for many years and produce the colony's eggs throughout most of her life.
