Black Garden Ant Queen
Lasius niger (queen)

A black garden ant queen is a larger reproductive female that begins life with wings and mates during summer nuptial flights. After mating, she usually sheds her wings and excavates or occupies a protected underground chamber in soil, lawns, or beneath paving. She initially raises her first brood using stored body reserves, then is fed sugary honeydew and insect prey by workers; a successful queen can live for many years and produce a large colony.
