Italian Locust (Gregarious Phase)

Calliptamus italicus (gregarious)

Italian Locust (Gregarious Phase)

In its gregarious phase, the Italian Locust gathers in dense bands and swarms across warm, dry steppe, grassland, field margins, and farmland. It feeds voraciously on grasses, herbs, legumes, and cultivated crops while moving collectively between feeding areas. Adults use powerful jumps and sustained, direct flight to keep pace with the swarm and evade threats. This phase can form during favorable hot, dry conditions at high population density, turning an ordinarily scattered grasshopper into a major agricultural pest.
