Eastern Oyster Larva
Crassostrea virginica (larva)

Eastern oyster larvae drift and swim in coastal estuaries and brackish bays, propelled by bands of tiny cilia. They filter microscopic algae and other suspended food from the water. After roughly two to three weeks of planktonic life, a larva searches for a hard surface on which to settle.
