Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

The adult is a strong-flying woodland butterfly with dark maroon-brown wings edged in pale yellow and marked with blue spots. Rather than visiting flowers often, it commonly feeds on tree sap, fermenting fruit, and mineral-rich moisture. It is one of the earliest butterflies seen in spring because adults overwinter in sheltered crevices and reappear on warm days. Males patrol sunny openings and perches to investigate passing butterflies.
