Summer tadpole shrimp
Triops longicaudatus

The adult summer tadpole shrimp inhabits short-lived freshwater pools, where it cruises over muddy bottoms and may dig into loose sediment. It is an opportunistic omnivore, eating algae, detritus, small invertebrates, and occasionally animal remains. Despite its ancient-looking form, it grows from hatchling to reproductive adult in only a few weeks when conditions are favorable.
