Japanese Wood Ant
Formica japonica

Japanese wood ants inhabit forests, forest edges, fields, and parks across Japan, nesting in soil and beneath stones or wood. Workers rapidly forage for insects, honeydew, and other sugary foods, using their mandibles to handle prey and defend themselves. When threatened, they can apply or spray formic acid as a chemical defense.
