Appalachian Brook Crayfish
Cambarus bartonii

The Appalachian brook crayfish inhabits clear streams, spring runs, and damp shelter beneath rocks in eastern North America. It feeds on algae, detritus, aquatic plants, and small animals it can seize with its claws. When threatened, it raises its pincers in defense and can shoot backward through the water with a powerful tail flip.
