Great Gray Shrike
Lanius excubitor

The adult Great Gray Shrike hunts across open country, bogs, heath, farmland edges, and northern woodland clearings. It watches from exposed perches, then flies out to seize insects, small birds, rodents, and lizards with its hooked bill. Prey is often wedged on thorns, barbed wire, or sharp twigs as a food store and as a way to tear it apart. Despite being a songbird, it behaves much like a tiny raptor and can take prey nearly its own size.
