Red-legged Seriema
Cariama cristata
The adult red-legged seriema inhabits open grasslands, savannas, and scattered woodland across central and eastern South America. It is a terrestrial hunter that runs down insects, reptiles, rodents, and other small animals, battering prey with its beak and powerful feet. Although capable of flight, it usually prefers to escape on foot and is well known for its loud, far-carrying calls.
