White-tailed Skimmer
Orthetrum albistylum
The adult white-tailed skimmer patrols ponds, lakesides, ditches, and other open freshwater habitats. It launches from low perches to catch flying insects such as mosquitoes, midges, and smaller dragonflies. Mature males are notable for their pale, powdery white abdomen, which is used in conspicuous territorial displays.
